Transforming Exams

This project aims to enable authentic, rich, high stakes assessments that will empower institutions to authenticate graduate outcomes fit for the employability requirements of the 21st century! We securely and sustainably leverage 'bring your own' (BYO) laptops to deploy face-to-face invigilated examinations primarily for the on-campus context.

An Australian federal government Office for Learning and Teaching grant in partnership with the ten Australian Universities was received to develop a multifaceted e-exam solution that includes both technical and procedural elements. Particular attention has been paid to concerns such as authentic assessment, pedagogical flexibility, academic workload, student preferences, ease of use, system robustness, scalability, integrity and sustainability.

Our e-Exam technology platform is capable of a variety of examination modes. This includes 'paper equivalent' exams where students can choose between hand writing and typing, 'post-paper' exams that integrate more question types, multimedia, simulations and additional 'e-tools of the trade' software applications as well as exams that incorporate computer marked questions; all made available for the large scale face-to-face supervised exam context. The main features are:

  • A 'whole computer', self contained, controlled, operating system and suite of e-tools of the trade applications for BYO laptops ~ but with no invasive software installs!
  • e-Workflow via a 'robust' LMS (Moodle) implementation for computer marked question types ~ highly resistant to network outages!
  • Restricted gateway to remote LMS or Virtual desktop.
